Property which runs into several thousands of dollars was reduced to
ashes when a building housing People’s Own Savings Bank (POSB)
Masvingo branch was gutted by fire on Monday.
A swift reaction by the Masvingo city council’s fire fighting team
saved the bank from the inferno as the team managed to put out the
raging flames before they reached the bank offices.
The building is owned by CAI Pension Fund and is leased to POSB,
ZINARA, TAM Charted Accountants among other tenants.
The cause of the fire could not be immediately established but it is
suspected to have been triggered by an electrical fault.
“We are yet to establish the cause of the inferno, but we are
suspecting that the fire could have been caused by an electrical fault
on the second floor of the building.
“The fire destroyed part of ZINARA and TAM Charted Accountants offices
and there is no damage to the bank and other tenants housed at the
building,” said Locadia Muroro the building’s caretaker.
She added that an investigation on the cause of the fire by a group of
experts is underway.
Scores of residents rushed to get a glimpse of the fire department
team at work, with residents expressing their gratitude over quick
reaction by the fire fighting team.
“We have seen a number of buildings within the city being reduced to
ashes over the years due to the late response by the fire department,
but in this case they came within 15 minutes when the fire was noticed
and did a good job in preventing the fire from spreading across the
building,” said an eye witness.
