A number of patients who get treated at the Masvingo provincial hospital supply fake residential addresses to the institution and the sole referral center is failing to recover its monies resulting in patients accumulating over $3 million they owe the Provincial referral health center.
Masvingo provincial hospital medical superintendent Dr Julius Chirengwa revealed the details during a tour of the hospital by the Minister of state for Provincial affairs Ezra Chadzamira on Thursday.
The dire financial situation at the hospital has in turn forced the institution to fail meeting its financial obligations to various service providers resulting the hospital owing in excess of $600 000 to its various service providers .
Dr Chirengwa said the institution owe large sums of money to Masvingo city council, ZESA and Telone.
“We do get our money from government and other partners through the result based financing but the money is not adequate.
“the situation has been worsened by patients who we treat here who supply us with fake addresses which makes it difficult to recover money from them resulting in them owing hospital $3 million which we are failing to recover but if we manage to get that money it will go a long way in improving the standards at the hospital,” Dr Chirengwa said.
He said the institution currently has 4 ambulances to service the entire province yet the institution requires 6 and called on for government to chip in with more resources and also help in securing resources from well wishers and the corporate world.
The medical superintendent bemoaned the shortage of drugs supply from Natpham forcing the institution to buy drugs from the private suppliers who demands cash on delivery .
